Cholesterol

Cholesterolย is an important type of fat (lipid) that is made by the body. It is needed for the body to function. It also is found in foods that are made from animal products (meat and dairy products).
Cells need cholesterol to function. But excess cholesterol in the blood builds up in blood vessels and may lead to hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis), heart disease, and stroke. People who have diabetes are at higher risk for atherosclerosis.

There are two main forms of cholesterol:

  • Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is called โ€œbad cholesterol. Most efforts to lower cholesterol are aimed at reducing levels of LDL.
  • High-density lipoprotein (HDL) is called good cholesterol.ย  It can help remove excess cholesterol from the blood vessels.

Triglycerides:ย Triglyceridesare a type of fat found in yourย blood. Your body uses them for energy. You need someย triglyceridesย for good health. But highย triglyceridesย might raise your risk ofย heart diseaseย and may be a sign ofย metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndromeย is the combination ofย high blood pressure, highย blood sugar, too much fat around the waist, low HDL (โ€œgoodโ€)ย cholesterol, and high triglycerides. Metabolic syndrome increases yourย risk for heart disease,ย diabetes, andย stroke.

Causes:

The most common causes of highย triglyceridesย areย obesityย and poorly controlledย diabetes. If you areย overweightย and are not active, you may have high triglycerides, especially if you eat a lot ofย carbohydrateย or sugary foods or drink a lot of alcohol. Binge drinking of alcohol can cause dangerous spikes inย triglyceride levelsย that can triggerย inflammationย of theย pancreas(pancreatitis).
Other causes of high triglycerides includeย hypothyroidism,ย kidney disease, and certainย inherited lipid disorders.
